“I’m Not Tech Savvy Enough” — Why That Fear Won’t Stop You From Building Online Income After 50

August 7, 2026by Deb Smithin Skills

I hear it almost every week. Someone messages me, interested, curious, maybe even a little hopeful… and then comes the line:

“Deb, I’d love to do something like this, but I’m just not tech savvy. I’ll probably mess it up.”

I want you to know something before you read another word: I said the same thing to myself back in 2012.

I wasn’t a computer person. I didn’t grow up with a smartphone in my hand. I was, and honestly still am, in a lot of ways a regular person who learned what she needed to learn, one small step at a time, because the alternative scared me more than the learning curve did.

Let me take you back for a second.

In 2012, I got my first layoff notice. I managed to land in another department and keep my job, but something shifted in me that day and never shifted back. I started asking myself a question I couldn’t unask: what happens when I can’t save myself next time?

So I started looking. Quietly, on the side, while still showing up to the office every single day. And let me tell you, I clicked around a lot of things I didn’t understand at first. I made mistakes. I got confused. There were nights I wanted to close the laptop and never open it again.

But here’s what I learned, and what I want you to hear clearly: you don’t need to be tech-savvy. You need a system that walks you through it, and people beside you who won’t let you get stuck.

That’s the real difference.

The reason so many people over 50 try something online and quit isn’t that they’re not smart enough or not capable enough. It’s because they were handed a login and told “good luck.” No roadmap. No real person to ask when something didn’t make sense. Just a pile of videos and a sink-or-swim attitude.

That’s not how I do things, and it’s not how the folks I work with do things either.

When you start with me, you’re never handed a username and password and left to figure it out alone. You get an actual plan, broken down into small, doable steps. You get a community of people, many of them your age, many of them just as unsure about “the tech stuff” as you are, cheering you on and answering your questions in real time. If you can send a text message, check your email, or scroll Facebook, you already have the skills you need to get started. Everything else, you learn as you go, with help right there beside you.

By the time my final layoff came in 2017, I was ready.

Not because I’d become some computer wizard. I hadn’t. I was ready because I’d found something simple enough to actually stick with, and I had people in my corner who made sure I never felt lost. That system is still what I run today from my RV, parked wherever the weather’s warm, alongside my husband and our son.

If “I’m not tech savvy enough” is the thing standing between you and a little more breathing room in your budget, a little more freedom to see your grandkids or finally tell your boss you’re done I want you to hear this from someone who’s been exactly where you are:

That fear is real. But it’s not the roadblock you think it is.

You don’t need to know everything before you start. You just need to be willing to take the first small step, and let someone who’s already walked the path show you the way.

About me

Hi, I'm Deb. After a corporate layoff in 2017, my husband and I sold our house, and since 2018 we've lived and worked full time in an RV with our adult son, who is on the autism spectrum.

I'm a mom of six, grandma of 12 and great-grandma of 5, and I'm building a simple online business we can run from anywhere. This blog is for women over 50 who want the same, without the tech headaches or the hype.

I'm doing this for us, and I'm still here.
