In 2012, I got my first layoff notice. I managed to keep my job by moving to a different department, but something shifted in me that day. I started asking a question I couldn't unask: <em>what happens when I can't save myself next time?</em>

So I started looking, quietly, on the side, for a way to earn a living without punching a clock. I wanted freedom, flexibility and more time with my family, especially our son, who's on the autism spectrum and needed more of me than a 9-to-5 could give.

There was plenty of trial and error, and a steep learning curve. I'm not a computer person, and I made my share of mistakes. But I finally found a simple system that worked, with real people beside me who wouldn't let me get stuck. My faith kept me going on the hard days. By the time my final layoff came in 2017, I was ready.

That simple income gave my husband, our son and me the freedom to spend years living and working from our RV, following the warm weather. We got to see places we might never have seen otherwise, like the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina and Bryce Canyon in Utah. All along, our dream was to someday trade Wisconsin winters for a home in Texas, and now, after all those miles, we're finally making that move.

Along the way, our family has grown too. I'm a mom of six, grandma of 12 and great-grandma of 6, and they're the biggest reason I do what I do.

I'm not a guru on a stage. I'm a friend who found something that worked and wants to share it.
